Welcome to the fifth edition of Leverage for the 2021-2022 NFL Season!

My goal in this space is to make you a better GPP player by highlighting concepts that can help you differentiate from your opponents and climb the leaderboard. Each week, I will highlight some of the thought process or strategy that goes into my approach when making tournament lineups. I’ll then use some specific examples from that week to help illustrate how I intend to implement those concepts into my own GPP lineups. The examples I highlight will be in my portfolio of lineups, but if you want to improve considerably as a GPP player, mastering the concepts are more important than copying the answers.

In Week 4’s Leverage, we touched on the value of being contrarian while aiming to reinforce the philosophy of “What do you win, when you win?”. Coming off of a strong Week 3 for players utilized by more than 15% of the field, we saw some choppier performances in Week 4. We had nine players utilized by more than 15% of the field in DraftKings’ $4.25 Millionaire Maker (251,328 entries) with three of them scoring above 25 Fantasy points, three below 10 Fantasy points, and three in between. Two of the three scores above 25 points (Derrick Henry 28.7 at $8,800 and David Montgomery 25.6 at $5,800) were recoverable as 11 total RBs scored above 20 Fantasy points on the slate and most were within striking distance of Montgomery’s price range. D.J. Moore‘s 34.9 DraftKings points at $6,600 was far more difficult to overcome, as just four WRs on the slate scored more than 25 DraftKings points. In the end, we had nine chalky pieces, three that if you faded you got a leg up on the field with their single-digit scores, three that were irrelevant, two you could overcome, and one chalk monster that was difficult to win without. This is a fairly typical GPP week where contrarian players gave themselves a chance to ascend the leaderboard but may have needed one of the chalk pieces to get to the very top.
