After a couple of weeks off, the PGA Tour returns to our lives with a new event. The Biltmore Championship debuts this week at the Cliffs at Walnut Cove in Arden, North Carolina, on a four-year agreement with Biltmore and Explore Asheville as co-title sponsors. It’s the first event in Asheville in 84 years and one of the smaller purses of the season at just $5 million. With zero top-25 players in the world golf rankings, we should see some less common names around the top of the leaderboard throughout the week.
The Course:
The Cliffs at Walnut Cove is a Nicklaus design that opened in 2005. Listed as a par 71 at 7,250 yards, it features bentgrass fairways, a bent and poa mix on the greens, and Kentucky bluegrass rough. Walnut Cove sits on nearly 1,000 acres of property, running across a valley, surrounded by ridges that close it off into a natural amphitheater. It also plays at elevation, listed at 2,200 feet, which means the ball will carry roughly 5% farther than at sea level, where most PGA Tour golf is contested.
