We have a little more than a quarter of the season left, which means the focus on awards markets shifts from bettable long shots to situations where you might want to hedge. Given that, I’ll map out the MVP, DPOY, OROY, and Comeback Player of the Year races. But first, I’ll discuss my favorite long shot.
Coach of the Year isn’t up at several sportsbooks as of this writing, so if I find anything useful in those markets, I’ll hop in Discord to discuss.
Value Option: DROY Abdul Carter (+1800 to +2500 BetMGM)
The Giants are on their bye, so I’m going to see if this dips more, but I have a thesis on Carter that I mentioned in Discord on Monday. Carter has been trending up on film lately. He was close to a multi-sack game against Detroit, and he was close to another against the Patriots, where he finished with one. The Giants have their softest schedule stretch of the year coming up on the other side of their bye: vs. WAS, vs. MIN, at LV, and vs. DAL.
Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger (-600) has a commanding lead behind a good year, but his production profile rarely wins this award. His standing is more about the other rookies not doing enough. I also don’t think voters are going to want to give two players on the Browns awards on a sub-.500 team unless they absolutely have to. Falcons edge rusher Jalon Walker (+950) has five sacks, but he does not have the name value or market that Carter does.
Carter needs to go on a tear to contend in this race, but he has the schedule, his performance on the field is starting to ascend, and he is the sort of rookie defender who tends to win this award. As far as long shots go that could get votes this deep into the season, Carter is my favorite.
