The 16th edition of The Presidents Cup runs Thursday through Sunday on Course No. 3, at Medinah, outside Chicago, with 30 points on offer across nine foursomes matches, nine four-ball matches, and 12 singles, and 15.5 needed to win. Brandt Snedeker captains the Americans, who lead the series 13-1-1, have won 10 straight, and beat the Internationals 18.5 to 11.5 at Royal Montreal two years ago. Geoff Ogilvy captains an International side that has not won since 1998.
The Course
Medinah No. 3 opened in 1928 as the last of Tom Bendelow’s three courses at the club, and for most of the century that followed, it was the standard American championship test: long, narrow, and walled in by trees. An official count before the 1999 PGA Championship put the trees lining its fairways and greens at 4,161. It hosted three U.S. Opens, Tiger’s PGA Championships in 1999 and 2006, and the European comeback at the 2012 Ryder Cup. Then the 2019 BMW showed how little the old version could do against modern players. Justin Thomas shot 61 in the third round and won at -25.
