The Tour heads to Michigan this week for the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club, the 33rd of 34 events in the FedEx Cup regular season and the last one this tournament will ever play. Rocket declined to extend its title sponsorship past 2026, and no replacement has been announced. The 144-man field is stronger than this event usually draws, with 21 of the top 50 in the world making the trip, and Cameron Young is the highest-ranked player among them at world No. 3. Aldrich Potgieter defends after winning here at 20 years old in a five-hole playoff in 2025.
The Course:
Detroit Golf Club is not the course the Tour played last summer. Tyler Rae broke ground on a $16.1 million restoration hours after Potgieter holed the winning putt. The North Course that reopens this week plays as a par 70 at 7,300 yards, down two strokes of par from the 72 it played for the first seven editions, as two of the short par 5s were converted into long par 4s. Rae worked from Donald Ross’ original 1914 plan, along with early aerial and ground-level photography, and the goal was to peel back decades of accumulated changes and restore the 1916 design with modern touches.
The list of changes is long. Bunker count went from 87 to 103, and the new ones are deeper, with sand flashed up the faces in place of the old grass-faced look and more of them sitting in landing zones off the tee. The greens were reconstructed on their original contours and are roughly 30% larger than they were, up from about 5,150 square feet to 6,703, which opens up hole locations the club has not been able to use in decades. Trees came out across the property. A set of historic cross-ditches was restored, and the pond in front of the 14th green was filled in and replaced with drainage, so there is now no water in play anywhere on the golf course. The fairways appear to have been tightened as well, listed around 26 yards across at the 300-yard mark versus roughly 30 before, which would put Detroit among the narrower driving tests on Tour.
