Value Report: Wyndham Championship

I’ll miss the Rocket Classic because, of course, a home-state PGA Tour event will always hold a special place in my heart, but it’s also delivered some great results and electric back nines. Michael Thorbjornsen took the cake this time for his maiden PGA Tour win, stepping on the gas on the back nine when the rest of the field left it wide open. Following in Jackson Koivun’s footsteps, it’s always cool to watch the younger crop begin to deliver on their promise. But I’m burying the lede here, as ole Jeremyqking took his rightful place back on the top of the DK Lotto standings with a cool $150,000 win. No one handles large-field play like JQK does with his pairings, ownership stands, and willingness to differ from the consensus, and when that strategy hits, it hits massively. Even if he admits he didn’t read this, I fully expect to see another Value Report golfer or outright selection from my card in his lineups going forward. Now it’s time for one of us to have that same result in The Driver!

It was a lengthy Value Report, but despite nine golfers on the list, we weren’t even able to garner a single top 20. It was a disappointing effort, as there were still paths to the bombers dominating even after the strong renovation. Stephan Jaeger was the only one who took advantage, and he remains a really strong large-field play with ownership rarely gravitating toward him despite the ceiling. The others who made the cut really didn’t sniff the top of the leaderboard at all, with Gordon Sargent being the next-highest scorer. He came flying out of the gates, but the lack of iron play definitely bit him over the weekend. On the missed-cut side, Aldrich Potgieter did his usual trick of two tail-end rounds. One being basically dead last and the second gaining quite a bit on the field, so when the mistakes can be limited, he is still a very viable target. It was tough, of course, with Andrew Novak having far and away his worst putting performance of the season after speaking confidently about it flipping soon; it has to be so frustrating for him. It was a shame that Billy Horschel didn’t keep his irons rolling, as the putts finally went in, which could be reason to go right back at the Wyndham.

As we turn the page to the final full-field event of the regular season, I want to say thanks again to everyone who has joined us this year! We won’t be going away for the playoffs, especially with prize pools still being large. But I realize football season is right around the corner and the fall swing won’t draw the same eyeballs. I truly appreciate getting to write about the sport I love, and the golf sickos that are in Discord make this role so much fun. Let’s close out the regular season with a bang at the Wyndham!
