The Falcons used their Week 14 bye to set up last year’s No. 74 overall pick Desmond Ridder for a final-month trial under center. Even while he outplayed placeholder Marcus Mariota, Ridder showed little to suggest he’s a long-term solution, averaging an anemic 6.2 yards per pass attempt with two TDs on 115 throws and a 63.5% completion rate. Yet the Falcons’ lone notable offseason quarterback addition was 30-year-old journeyman Taylor Heinicke, who is playing for his seventh pro team in nine years since going undrafted out of Old Dominion. A Joe Gibbs disciple, Arthur Smith is extremely likely to maintain a smash-mouth offensive identity after 2022’s Falcons led the NFL with 559 rushing attempts.
