Passing Game Overview
Drafted in 2022’s fifth round out of North Carolina, Sam Howell entered 2023 training camp as the favorite to take over as Washington’s starter with Carson Wentz (free agent) and Taylor Heinicke (Falcons) out the door. The Commanders’ lone notable quarterback addition was fifth-team journeyman Jacoby Brissett on a one-year deal. Howell’s NFL résumé is virtually blank, although his college résumé foreshadowed a potential future fantasy asset; Howell banked a career 92:23 TD-to-INT passing ratio and ran for over 800 yards and 11 TDs in his final season at UNC. He also flashed dynamic ability as both a passer and runner in his rookie NFL preseason. I’m ranking Howell as a low-floor yet intriguing QB2.
Terry McLaurin comes off his third straight season of 75-plus catches and 1,050-plus yards, continuing to prove himself quarterback-proof. Through four NFL campaigns, McLaurin’s QBs have consisted of Heinicke, Wentz, Dwayne Haskins, Case Keenum, Alex Smith, Garrett Gilbert, Colt McCoy, Kyle Allen, and Howell. In Howell’s lone 2022 start, he connected with McLaurin for 3/74/1 receiving on a team-high six targets. I expect McLaurin to be a volatile yet high-ceiling week-to-week producer in 2023.
