Team Totals: Bills 23, Texans 21.5

The Bills’ season opens with a worst-case-scenario matchup on the road against the Texans’ AFC-best defense, which got better this offseason via the additions of FS Reed Blankenship, EDGE Jadeveon Clowney, and hulking second-round rookie DT Kayden McDonald. HC DeMeco Ryans’ defense is so talented that he can afford to run a largely stationary, no-frills scheme that wins on sheer speed, physicality, and relentless tackling. The static approach prevents enemy quarterbacks from identifying pre-snap advantages. Josh Allen obviously has immense talent in his own right, but we can only reasonably lower his Week 1 box-score expectations due to the opponent. When these teams met last November, Allen took eight sacks, threw two picks, and accounted for no touchdowns in a 23-19 Texans win. … James Cook (17/116/1 rushing, 3/13/0 receiving) provided the Bills’ lone offensive spark in the aforementioned matchup, giving fantasy managers something on which to hang their hat when keeping Cook in their lineups. Allen and Cook remain bet-on-talent FF plays only. It wouldn’t be the least bit surprising if one or both of them disappoint.
