The FedEx Cup heads to Japan this week for the Baycurrent Classic at Yokohama Country Club, the second year the event has been played here. It is a 72-man, no-cut event with an $8 million purse and 500 FedEx Cup points on the line, and it brings the strongest field of the fall so far, with five of the world’s top 25 making the trip: Wyndham Clark, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Jacob Bridgeman, and Ryan Gerard. Hideki Matsuyama and Justin Thomas sit just outside that group. Schauffele defends after closing with a 64 to beat Max Greyserman by a shot last year.
The Course:
Yokohama Country Club plays as a par 71 at 7,410 yards, a composite routing of 16 holes from the West Course and two from the East. Takeo Aiyama built both courses in the 1960s, and Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw rebuilt the West in the mid-2010s, removing the old two-green system, reshaping the greens, and redoing the bunkering. The fairways and rough are both zoysia, with the rough cut to around two inches, and the greens are bentgrass, averaging about 7,000 square feet and running close to 11.5 on the Stimp, a little slower than a typical Tour week. Ahead of the Tour’s debut last year, the club added rough, moved fairway lines, built new fairway bunkers on the 2nd and 15th, and added new tees on six holes.
