When we review winning lineups, we can think backward and determine what game-script ideas and correlations went into constructing each roster. In the Week 1 2020 MNF matchup between the Titans and Broncos, pricing was incredibly soft and it was easy to lock in top projected player Derrick Henry into the captain spot without making additional sacrifices to the rest of our lineup. The field followed suit, owning Henry in the captain spot at a 31.4% rate. At elevated ownership, it made sense to look for paths where Henry could be outscored by another option; one such path was to assume the Titans had success through the air. Corey Davis at captain immediately provided leverage off of Henry and fellow WR A.J. Brown, who was also highly owned. The winning lineup paired Davis with QB Ryan Tannehill and included Henry in the flex, locking up a majority of the team’s offensive production. Davis’ cheap $9,000 captain salary and lack of high-priced options from the Broncos side kept the lineup’s total salary ($47,000) well below the cap without sacrificing too many projected points and ensured it wouldn’t be duplicated despite high cumulative ownership (268.48%). These are the types of decisions we have to think through during showdown lineup construction in an effort to maximize correlation and uniqueness.

TEAM-SPECIFIC ANALYSIS & NOTABLE PRICE CONSIDERATIONS
Their playoff hopes and Super Bowl aspirations suffering an untimely end as Joe Burrow underwent surgery on his right wrist, the Cincinnati Bengals will travel to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars as prohibitive 10-point road underdogs in a game featuring a paltry 40-point total. At 8-3, the Jags will look to keep the distance between themselves and AFC South contenders after both Indianapolis and Houston left their Week 13 games victorious. While we have just a six-quarter sample to lean on, we’ve seen Bengals HC Zac Taylor maintain his pass-happy ways with Burrow sidelined, still ranking first in situation-neutral pass rate (69%) on 65 offensive snaps in Weeks 11-12, posting individual Pass Rates Over Expectation of 1% and 18%, respectively. On the season, Cincy ranks first in PROE (+8.8%) and situation-neutral pass rate (66%), something we should expect to regress closer to league average without one of the league’s best QBs but not something we should expect Taylor to entirely abandon. Especially as a 10-point road dog against a Jaguars defense that is around league average in both Pass EPA per Play Allowed (-0.033) and Rush EPA per Play Allowed (-0.104), I’m anticipating plenty of dropbacks, inefficient as they may be. Just our second Jaguars primetime showdown slate of the season, it’s been a while since we’ve dissected OC Press Taylor’s offense. Their 27th-ranked situation-neutral pass rate (52%) doesn’t tell the whole story, as Taylor’s unit still ranks sixth on the season in PROE (+2.5%) and has posted a negative Pass Rate Over Expectation in a game just four times all season, including just once in their last seven games, generally displaying a balanced run-pass ratio. As a 10-point home favorite against a Cincinnati defense that has been equally bad against the run and pass, we should anticipate another fairly balanced game plan here, for as long as the scoreboard necessitates it.Â
There are a few question marks surrounding Ja’Marr Chase’s ($9,400) outlook, mainly revolving around whether or not he can overcome the QB downgrade to still provide Monday night value and if the return of Tee Higgins ($7,600) for the first time since Week 9 makes an already ugly situation worse? As for Chase’s usage profile, the underlying data is still strong; he leads the team in target share (28.6%), Air Yards share (38.3%), RZ target share (31.4%), and EZ targets (9) on a PPR-friendly 8.7-yard aDOT that should result in a high catch rate even with fewer catchable targets being sent his way now. In the six games with Higgins active this season, Chase still led the duo in target share (26.6% to 19.6%), first-read target share (35.3% to 22.9%), and designed target share (24.6% to 4.8%), giving me more confidence in him being able to pay off his $9.4K tag than I have in Higgins being able to pay off his. It doesn’t hurt that PFF credits Jacksonville with the league’s fourth-highest Zone Coverage rate (83.7%), where Chase has been Cincy’s best receiver, managing 2.28 YPRR. I think Chase is a fringe cash-game consideration but may be better deployed as a CPT in small- and large-field tournaments given the way roster construction ultimately shakes out. Higgins’ return almost entirely removes Trenton Irwin ($1,800) from consideration outside of touchdown-or-bust dart throws, as he ran a route on just 20.9% of dropbacks in six games where Higgins was healthy this season, and it makes it even more difficult to get to Tyler Boyd ($5,600), who feels fully priced still. In six games alongside Higgins, Boyd managed a 14.5% target share and an 18.9% Air Yards share. If coupled with a meaningful ownership discount, I’ll consider some GPP shots on Boyd, whose low 6.6-yard aDOT can lead to plenty of garbage-time production on PPR-friendly sites like DraftKings. Though Tanner Hudson ($4,000) hasn’t completely taken over the Bengals’ TE1 role, he has forced his way into a full-blown three-headed committee between him, Irv Smith Jr. ($1,000), and Drew Sample ($1,200), where he looks like the clear best pass-catching threat amongst the trio. Since becoming a weekly part of the offense in Week 9, Hudson has managed a 15.3% target share and 10.9% Air Yards share, displaying an impressive ability to earn targets with a 33% TPRR rate on just 36% of the team’s routes. While it may be wishcasting, there is a ceiling here if Hudson does start running more routes. Both Sample and Smith were priced cheap enough that we can’t entirely ignore them as touchdown-or-bust dart throws in large-field GPPs, though Mitchell Wilcox ($800) will be active, turning this into a real murky situation. Priced cheaply enough on DraftKings, Joe Mixon ($7,000) looks like one of the more attractive Bengals options Monday night. He’s maintained a bellcow role, handling 81% of the team’s rushing attempts on the season, including 90% of the RZ rushing attempts and 100% of the attempts inside the 5-yard line. He’s also been an involved receiver, running a route on 56% of dropbacks, adding a 10% target share. While he will lose some work in long-down-and-distance and 2-minute situations to Trayveon Williams ($400), this is a role that should result in plenty of work, even as a 10-point road dog. A fairly neutral rushing matchup for Mixon, it certainly doesn’t hurt that Jacksonville is allowing the league’s fourth-highest target share (20.1%) to opposing RBs. Though I generally defer to the QB position in cash-game contests and Jake Browning’s ($8,800) price is fair, I don’t think he is a cash-game must Monday night. Still, under center for a team that does profile to drop back early and often, I have FLEX interest in both small- and large-field GPPs, where I do expect the field’s aversion to backup QBs is going to result in a significant ownership discount.
Seemingly incapable of posting usable DFS performances in the same game, it feels crucial to get Calvin Ridley ($9,200) and Christian Kirk ($8,200) ‘right’ Monday night. Though Kirk holds a slight lead in to-date fantasy production, it’s Ridley who has the slightly better usage profile, taking a backseat in target share (20.6% to 22.8%) but leading in Air Yards share (35.6% to 31.1%), RZ target share (35.5% to 16.1%), and EZ targets (12 to 4), while Kirk’s slightly lower aDOT (10.0 to 12.7) has resulted in a higher catch rate. However, now we have Kirk $1,000 cheaper in a matchup against a Bengals secondary that uses Man Coverage at the league’s 10th-highest rate (28.2%), according to PFF, where Kirk has feasted, averaging 3.32 YPRR against man this season. PFF also notes that Cincy’s secondary has allowed an explosive play on 17.5% of man coverage snaps, ranking in the bottom 10 of the league. I’ll side with Kirk for the better draw against man coverage and the $1,000 savings, but don’t be fooled: This is a great spot for both receivers. Zay Jones ($5,200) has played five games this season, managing a 13.3% target share and 20.0% Air Yards share on an 11.7-yard aDOT. I view him as a small- and large-field tournament flier if ownership is low enough, but otherwise, the price is full and the role isn’t overly inspiring. Evan Engram ($6,200) may be the best price-adjusted pass catcher of the group, ranking second on the team in target share (22.2%) and third in Air Yards share (13.8%) operating as the team’s safety blanket with a 78.0% catch rate on a 4.5-yard aDOT. It helps that Cincinnati has yielded fruitful fantasy results for opposing TEs this season, allowing the league’s third-most DraftKings points per game to the position (15.4) through 11 games. Battling through a rib injury, Travis Etienne Jr. ($10,200) is expected to play after logging limited practices to end the week. He’s owned a bellcow role throughout the season, handling 66% of the team’s rushing attempts, including 53.3% of the RZ attempts while also running a route on 61% of dropbacks, adding a 12% target share. In a true three-down and goal-line role, Etienne has played on 72% of short-down-and-distance, 69% of long-down-and-distance, and 89% of 2-minute snaps, according to Fantasy Life’s Utilization Report. Now at home as a double-digit favorite, he should have an opportunity to feast against a Bengals run defense that is allowing the league’s third-highest Explosive Rush rate (6.8%), most Yards Before Contact per Attempt (1.9), and fifth-lowest Stuff Rate (41.1%). For those concerned about the health of Etienne’s ribs or think this game gets sideways in a hurry, D’Ernest Johnson ($4,200) could be the primary beneficiary in either circumstance. More involved over the last three games, Johnson has handled 22% of the team’s rushing attempts since Week 9, running a route on 28% of dropbacks, adding a 5% target share. Given the possible outs to a viable fantasy performance, I don’t mind using Johnson in GPPs if ownership is right. Trevor Lawrence ($10,800) profiles as one of the few cash-game must-haves Monday night and should be a centerpiece of most profitable GPP roster constructions, particularly at the FLEX position. Lawrence isn’t known for his legs, but he’s using them enough to raise his weekly floor-ceiling combo, handling 15.9% of the team’s rushing attempts including a 22.2% share in the red zone. While I do prefer loading up on his pass catchers at CPT if forced to choose, I don’t mind CPT Lawrence double stacks in tournaments as a means to try and soak up the entirety of the Jaguars’ aerial attack.
TOP PLAYS
Given the importance of maximizing raw points, correlation, and uniqueness, we’ve grouped our top plays into three categories: top overall plays, top value plays, and top leverage plays. Our top leverage plays are ones where we identify a player that has a higher chance to be a necessary piece of a winning lineup than ownership projections would indicate.
Player | Category | Notes |
Trevor Lawrence | Overall | The no-brainer top overall option, Lawrence is under center at home for an offense that is a 10-point favorite with a 25-point team total. He should be able to slice through this below-average Cincy secondary for as long as the scoreboard requires. |
Travis Etienne Jr. | Overall | Likely benefiting from a positive game script, ETN should have plenty of opportunities to shake loose against one of the league’s worst run defenses. |
Ja’Marr Chase | Overall | Whether it’s Burrow or Browning under center, it doesn’t change the fact that Chase is still an alpha WR1, and I expect him to be deployed as such with the coaching staff scheming him opportunities to help get their QB in a rhythm. This can still be a fruitful fantasy role even with below-average QB play in what is a good primetime matchup for Chase. |
Christian Kirk | Overall | Kirk is $1,000 cheaper than Ridley and has been a more consistent fantasy producer through 11 games. He gets a slight nod here as the better receiver against man coverage, which Cincy uses at a top-10 rate. |
Jaguars D/ST | Value | Skill-position value is nearly impossible to come by Monday night, making the Jags’ defense incredibly valuable at just $4,800. They aren’t world-beaters, but they are 10-point home favorites against an inexperienced QB who’s behind an OL that ranks 30th in ESPN’s Pass-Block Win Rate. |
Evan Engram | Value | In the mid-tier, Engram is one of the slate’s better values. He has a strong role in the Jaguars’ offense and gets a matchup against a Cincy defense that is allowing the league’s third-most DraftKings points per game to his position. |
Joe Mixon | Value | Running backs that are 10-point road dogs aren’t typically a spot to target, but I’m willing to bet on volume and price here to some degree. Mixon should still touch the ball plenty regardless of script. |
CPT Calvin Ridley | Leverage | Ridley’s $9,200 tag is going to keep his ownership in check as the field is more likely to gravitate toward both Kirk and Engram at cheaper prices. We know a slate-breaking ceiling still exists. |
Jake Browning | Leverage | Let’s be honest — the projection here doesn’t really matter. Once the field finds themselves in this range, they’re way more likely to click on Chase, Ridley, or Kirk, leaving the Bengals’ starter unowned. |
D’Ernest Johnson | Leverage | It’s difficult to get a big projection on Johnson, so I think his ownership won’t get out of hand, but there are a few paths to him providing a slate-winning score at $4,200. |
Irv Smith Jr. | Dart Throw | A byproduct of the slate’s tough pricing, Smith is a fine GPP dart throw at just $1,000. He has still run a route on 37% of dropbacks since Week 9 and could be a beneficiary of negative game script. |
STACK IDEAS
* CPT Christian Kirk, Trevor Lawrence, Joe Mixon – There’s no need to reinvent the wheel here, as I think the CPT Kirk and Lawrence start is one of the slate’s highest-ceiling combinations, one that’s made better if this game plays a little closer than oddsmakers are expecting it to, allowing Mixon to rack up touches in neutral script. Kirk benefits from a man-heavy Cincy scheme that should give him opportunities to bank explosive plays.
* CPT Travis Etienne Jr., Jaguars D/ST, Tanner Hudson – Another traditional game-script-focused build, if Jacksonville does go out and cover the double-digit spread, we should expect plenty of volume for the RB1 while the defense has a chance to pin its ears back and get after an inexperienced QB behind a below-average OL.
* CPT Ja’Marr Chase, Jake Browning, Evan Engram – We’ve seen sub-30% total ownership on underdog QBs this season five separate times already, and I’m expecting it to happen again Monday night. Browning doesn’t even need to be Burrow for this duo to pay off their respective tags en route to a slate-winning performance.
* CPT Calvin Ridley, Trevor Lawrence, Tee Higgins – Ridley is going to get a little lost in the sauce given the $9.2K tag and narrative — or reality — that Kirk is a better scheme-based play against the Bengals’ secondary. Regardless, we know he has 25-point upside. One way for him to increase his chances of getting there is in a back-and-forth affair where explosive plays from Higgins on the other side force Jacksonville into more dropbacks.
ROSTER CONSTRUCTION UTILIZATION PROJECTIONS
Understanding how our opponents will construct lineups offers opportunities for leverage in large-field tournaments. These projections use a combination of historical results and slate-specific pricing, ownership, and fantasy-point projections to calculate how often each lineup build will be used. Please note: The number of favorites is listed first; the number of underdogs is listed second. For example, 1-5 refers to one favorite – five underdogs.Â
