Major championship season is in full swing as the PGA Tour heads to the Philadelphia suburbs for the 108th PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club. The Wanamaker Trophy has not been contested here since Gary Player won in 1962, and the last time we saw the golf course was the 2018 BMW Championship. The field of 156 is customarily star-studded, with each of the world’s top 25 slated to tee it up.
The Course:
Aronimink Golf Club is set to play as a 7,394-yard par 70 with 12 par 4s, four par 3s, and two par 5s. The course was originally designed by Donald Ross in 1928 and was restored by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner between 2016 and 2017 using Ross’ original field diagrams and 8mm aerial film to return the course closer to its as-built character than the previous Ron Prichard-led restoration had achieved. The most consequential structural changes from the Hanse project were a near-tripling of the bunker count from 74 to roughly 174, the conversion of Ross’ larger green-side bunker complexes into clusters of smaller “shotgun-style” hazards, the expansion of several greens by as much as 30 feet, and the widening of selected fairways alongside additional length on the back tees. The agronomy is bentgrass fairways, bentgrass greens averaging roughly 8,200 square feet, and 3.25-inch tall fescue/poa rough.
