Course Preview and Fits: Wyndham Championship

The regular season ends this week at the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, the 87th playing of an event that dates to 1938 and the last chance for anyone outside the FedEx Cup top 70 to play their way into the playoffs. For a chunk of this 144-man field, the season is already secure and this is a tune-up. And for another chunk, it is the whole year in four rounds. The field is better than the date usually produces, with Cameron Young back to defend alongside Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Cantlay, Aaron Rai, Hideki Matsuyama, and Keegan Bradley.

The Course:

Sedgefield is a Donald Ross design from 1926, restored by Kris Spence in 2007 before the tournament moved back here in 2008. It plays as a par 70 at roughly 7,130 yards, which makes it one of the shortest courses the Tour sees all year. The greens, fairways, and rough are all Bermudagrass, laid in 2012 to replace bentgrass that could not survive a Carolina August. There are 52 bunkers, water in play on six holes, and pine straw and trees lining most of the property.

Sedgefield gives up a lot of birdies. Nine of the last 10 winning scores have been between -18 and -22, and Brandt Snedeker shot 59 here in 2018. It sports only two par 5s, both of which grade among the easiest holes we track, and a set of par 3s that play under par in a typical year. The field hits greens at nearly a 73% rate, the eighth-highest mark of any course where we have data.
