Football is a high-variance sport with an oblong ball that takes strange bounces and a short, 17-game regular season. In truth, there’s no such thing as a pick that doesn’t have a somewhat wide range of potential outcomes. The injury risk both to that player and any teammates that affect their production is simply too high. But certainly some players are higher-variance than others, and it’s important to be cognizant of each player’s range of outcomes when you’re deciding who to choose in your fantasy draft. Today, we’ll run through which players we think have wider ranges of outcomes than is typical or perceived by the market and who is relatively low-variance in comparison.
How to use this information: Variance is not necessarily good or bad in fantasy football. Some leagues have extremely top-heavy payout structures, while others do not. It may make sense to target lower-variance options when you have already taken on a bunch of risk or have a massive advantage over the rest of your league in a different way (late-round drafting, waiver-wire usage, trading, etc.). Best ball drafters may lean into higher-variance situations when in doubt between two picks. Finally, this list could also be used early in the season for DFS and prop betting as we gain more information on player outlooks. You may be able to update your outlook on a player before the market catches on.
HIGH-VARIANCE
Puka Nacua – Nacua has led the NFL in targets per route run (minimum 50 routes) in each of the past two seasons. He also missed five games due to injury in 2024 and left multiple games early last season, plus his quarterback is 38 years old with a bad back.
Christian McCaffrey – McCaffrey finished as the overall RB1 in 2025, but he’s 30 years old and coming off a 450-touch season (including postseason). He could be the most valuable player in fantasy if he stays healthy, but availability is a major concern.
Rashee Rice – Rice is an off-field risk (he spent a month in jail this offseason), and the Chiefs’ offense has had two down years in a row while heavily featuring him. He’s been one of the best target earners in football recently (0.32 TPRR in 2025) and could challenge for the league lead in catches if available all season.
