Fantasy football strategy is often given uniformly based on what draft pick you have and your league’s scoring settings. However, much of this talk fails to mention that the size of your league can also considerably change your draft strategy.
Most advice nowadays is centered around 12-team leagues. Today, we’ll break down how your strategy should change in a smaller (10 teams or fewer) league. In this article, I discuss how to draft in larger leagues (14+ teams).
QUARTERBACK AND TIGHT END
The quarterback position in fantasy football isn’t what it used to be. 15 years ago, everyone was taking QBs in the first couple of rounds of their fantasy drafts, but then the late-round QB strategy (correctly) became en vogue. People realized there wasn’t that much of a difference between the overall QB1 and low-end QB1s, so it didn’t make much sense to pay up when you could get comparable production later.
That is no longer the case. With dual-threat options like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Jayden Daniels posting triple-digit fantasy points on the ground in addition to elite passing efficiency, there is now a bigger gap between the elite QBs and the lower-tier ones. With that being said, QB2-caliber players have stepped up their game in recent seasons as well, and the tier now boasts players with legit rushing upside (Jaxson Dart, 8.5 rushing PPG last year; Malik Willis, 6.0; Kyler Murray, 4.9). These guys can’t match Allen/Jackson from a ceiling standpoint, but the difference in cost is substantial, and it means you have legit quarterback options late in drafts.
