When was the last time we didn’t have a signature event? Because it sure feels like a hell of a long time. We are gearing up for the second major of the season next week, and quite honestly, I am a little bit disappointed with DraftKings for not posting some more satellites for the $4,444. Not even a SUPER Sat! Unbelievable. But anyway, we are coming off another signature event at the Blue Monster, which was quite divisive among the golf world as to whether or not it was actually a good event. I will admit, it did feel like there was some fatigue out there, even in DFS, and DraftKings nuked R4 contests along the way. Let’s hope that’s not a sign of things to come.
Cadillac Championship – Recap
I would be remiss to skip mentioning Discord senior citizen LSahr in a recap of the Cadillac Championship last week, as our elderly friend took down the Sand Trap for a cool $200K. What a week for a sub who has really put in the work in terms of process and shifted his play from homing in on specific players. If you didn’t believe that my results were a result of my process and removed bias from player evaluation, hopefully you believe it when a subscriber like Larry wins. Anyway, let’s take a look at the winning lineup. Luckily, I don’t have to create a chart and write in Larry’s DK name so it can live forever.
- The lineup used a fairly “normal” construction, starting with Cameron Young and going with a 10/9/8/7/7/6 structure. This may be anecdotal (THE Kyle might have this information if you trust his Excel work), but it feels like “different” roster constructions haven’t been having much success this year. Do I think that is a trend? Absolutely not, but it’s something to note.
- It came in at ~65% cumulative ownership, slightly lower than the 70-90% range we normally target for signature events, but not far off. One thing I say week after week is how I am not afraid to come in lower than the target ownership range, but I am absolutely allergic to having lineups come in above the ownership range. The best way to do that is to manage steam and squeeze candidates appropriately, where I often move steam candidates’ ownership even MORE than I think they might move if I’m confident in it.
I can’t say that the Cadillac was anything special in DFS terms besides just another entry in our book when we are looking at winning lineup history. I’m not sure how many results I’d need for this to be statistically significant, but it feels like we’re there. Roster construction is one of the pillars of PGA DFS, and we know how to build for large-field GPPs.
Truist Championship – Preview
On to the Truist Championship, which has a new sponsor this year. The Truist will be held at the famous Quail Hollow Country Club, where this event used to be called the Wells Fargo Championship for as long as I can remember. Quail Hollow, a course that is sometimes used for major championships as well, is one of the most well-known courses on the PGA Tour circuit. Known for being a bomber’s paradise, we’re going to have to manage that narrative a bit when it comes to ownership and projection. Let’s take a look at the past five winners at Quail Hollow:
- 2025 PGA Championship: Scottie Scheffler (-11) def. Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English, and Davis Riley by five strokes
- 2024: Rory McIlroy (-16) def. Xander Schauffele by five strokes
- 2023: Wyndham Clark (-19) def. Xander Schauffele by two strokes
- 2021: Rory McIlroy (-10) def. Abraham Ancer by one stroke
- 2019: Max Homa (-15) def. Joel Dahmen by three strokes
