I said on the FanDuel Show Sunday morning, “What year is this… that people want to play Tony Pollard and Chris Godwin in GPPs?”
Well, one of them had 27 yards receiving for 4.7 FanDuel points, and the other scored three TDs, had 38 FanDuel points, and was the leading scorer on the slate. Good times.
The funny thing about my question above is that I’m rarely a “hot take” guy. Sure, I have leans, opinions, stances on players, slate angles, etc. Once those things are in place, however, I let the sims, numbers, projections, and projected ownership guide most of my decision-making. I consider our projections/data to be super sharp, so I’m not much of an “IKB” (I Know Better) guy. I was in this case, though, and I’m happy to take the “L” on Pollard.
As for the micro section last week, there wasn’t a whole lot of middle ground. It seemed like most of them found a ceiling game, or a flat-out floor game (Thanks, Ted!).
Week 7 Micro Recap:
- QB: Joe Burrow, CIN, 28.8 points
- RB: Derrick Henry, BAL, 5.4 points
- RB: Kyren Williams, LAR, 17.1 points
- WR: Ja’Marr Chase, CIN, 14.7 points
- WR: Tetairoa McMillan, CAR, 6.0 points
- WR: Ted Hurst, TB, 0.0 points
- TE: Trey McBride, ARI, 25.1 points
- DEF: Cleveland Browns, 5.0 points
Hopefully you had the ceiling-game guys combined with the right players in your lineups (and Tony Pollard), and were able to have a profitable GPP week.
Macro: Information Overload
In Week 5, I gave you a homework assignment: assess your weekly DFS schedule and preparation. You didn’t think I forgot about that, did you? As you assessed your current schedule (or lack thereof) that week, the goal was to create an efficient and structured schedule for yourself that you could succeed with each week.
As I mentioned in the article, most successful DFS players have a structured weekly schedule like that. The thing I didn’t mention in the article, though, is that there was another reason that I had you evaluate your weekly process. An underlying reason few people talk about, but many DFS players fall victim to (at least to some degree) each week: information overload.
If we aren’t careful, one of the biggest traps a DFS player can fall into is consuming so much content in a given week that by the time Sunday arrives, your brain is flooded with more information than you can possibly use.
All week long you have listened to this podcast, and watched that YouTube show, and read this article, and looked at this set of projections, and so on and so on. By the time you get to Sunday afternoon, it seems like every player on the slate has been touted as a “good play” by somebody on some show. Sound familiar?
That’s where your process comes in. Much like consuming news, injuries, and beat-writer blurbs, content is similar. You should have a process, and you should be able to decipher what is and isn’t important. The ability to quickly prioritize and rank information, through your process, is what ultimately will result in your “takes.” However, if you don’t have a plan in place for all of this, it’s just an overwhelming flood of information that winds up being almost less beneficial than not listening to a single thing all week.
Obviously, I believe our content is the sharpest out there, and I assume that if you are reading this article, you likely believe that as well. That said, people often consume other shows and content throughout the week as well. Here’s the thing: If you don’t have a good process in place, then it will be the shows and content that wind up consuming you!
