We’re going to get a lot of stuff wrong, but sifting through usage metrics can help us work through what matters and what doesn’t. That’s the goal of this article: to break down the most actionable takeaways from each week in a concise, numbers-filled format and work through what’s important. Let’s get right to it:
1. Roman Wilson was out-snapping Germie Bernard 20-2 in Week 3 before dropping a ball that turned into an interception. He played just five snaps after that and continued paying the price in Week 4 with Bernard out-routing Wilson 20-18. Wilson was still highly productive despite limited routes (three catches for 74 yards) and could regain his role next week, but WR3 has turned into a rotation in Pittsburgh for now.
2. Darnell Washington ran a route on 53.3% of the Steelers’ dropbacks. Pat Freiermuth played 75% of snaps; Washington played 71%. Pittsburgh leaned more into 12 personnel with the WR3 questions.
3. The Jaylen Warren role without Rico Dowdle remained absurd. Warren played 97% of snaps, ran 33 routes on 45 dropbacks, earned six targets for a 15.0% share, and got 17 of 19 RB carries, which he turned into 93 yards. Dowdle was initially tabbed day-to-day with his toe injury and likely returns in Week 5, but Warren has played well in his absence and likely separated himself a little bit as the RB1.
4. KC Concepcion played a season-high 92% of snaps; Jerry Jeudy played a season-low 38%. The Browns turned to Concepcion as a full-time player in Week 3 and took it even further in Week 4, and Jeudy bottomed out with 19 routes on 37 dropbacks. Concepcion and Denzel Boston combined for 15 of Deshaun Watson‘s 33 attempts as the Browns continue to rely heavily on their rookie WRs, and Jeudy looks like a potential trade candidate if anybody wants him.
5. Keenan Allen was out, Darius Slayton remained a healthy scratch, and Ashton Dulin was back for the Colts. Laquon Treadwell remained in a full-time role on the outside with 85% snaps and 36 routes on 37 dropbacks. Josh Downs‘ snap rate jumped back up to 77% after an oddly low Week 3, but he was quiet with three catches for 16 yards on four targets.
