Passing Game Overview

Finally finagling his way out of Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers arrived in New York this April in exchange for two minor draft-pick swaps, 2023’s No. 43 overall selection, and a 2024 second-rounder that becomes a first if Rodgers plays 65% or more of the Jets’ 2023 offensive snaps. Rodgers reunites with first-year OC Nathaniel Hackett, who coordinated Green Bay’s 2019-2021 offenses with Rodgers at the helm. Rodgers won back-to-back MVP awards with the help of Hackett in 2020 and 2021. Yet Rodgers’ 2023 box-score outlook is pedestrian considering his minimal rushing contributions and the likelihood Gang Green plays stout defense, lessening pressure on the Jets’ offense to respond with high-scoring counterattacks.

2022 No. 10 overall pick Garrett Wilson overcame fielding off-target passes from Zach Wilson, Mike White, and Joe Flacco to earn Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Wilson hit paydirt in only 2-of-17 games, however, and reached 100 yards three times. Consensus fantasy rankings suggest an instant bond between Wilson and Rodgers should be assumed. While Wilson’s future is obviously bright, I think short-term expectations should be more tempered than Wilson’s second-year ADP suggests.

Allen Lazard inked a four-year, $44 million deal ($22 million guaranteed) with the Jets this offseason, while Corey Davis returns at an $11.2 million cap number and Mecole Hardman joined for one year at $4 million. Gang Green also signed longtime Rodgers pal Randall Cobb to a one-year, $3 million deal, albeit with just $250,000 guaranteed. Probable pass-volume restrictions should limit expectations for the entirety of New York’s passing attack and most specifically the Jets’ complementary pass catchers.
