Welcome to the Week 13 edition of Snaps & Pace, where we examine trends in play volume and game pace. It is meant to be a 30,000-foot view of upcoming contests, with the goal of identifying which matchups will – and which will not – be played on fertile fantasy soil. For a primer on why this is important, click here.

As in life, the later it gets in the season, the more things slow down. As teams lose players, the weather deteriorates, and division rivals have rematches, conditions are less optimal for offensive precision and explosion. Getting old sucks.

In addition to this year’s unique COVID-related madness, we’ve recently seen Joe Burrow’s injury cripple the pass-happy Bengals and Daniel Jones‘ hamstring the Giants’ up-tempo efforts, while the absence of Julio Jones and Kenny Golladay slowed their offenses’ paced-up approaches. Not to mention what happened to the Cowboys without Dak Prescott and an offensive line, or the once-beautiful Seahawks offense when Pete Carroll remembered fossilized football fables like identity, balance, and momentum.

With the quickening Bucs offense on bye, and a pair of fast, pass-heavy offenses moved to Monday night in Pittsburgh, a Week 13 main slate already bereft of tempo becomes even more barren. For the first time this season, only two games qualify for Up In Pace status, but we target additional team-specific tempo spikes down in Pace Notes.
