In our Birmingham Stallions team preview, we set the stage for the 2026 UFL season, highlighting all of the league’s biggest moves during the offseason that will have a trickle-down effect on the rosters for the remaining organizations. The D.C. Defenders were largely immune to those offseason changes, keeping a core nucleus intact that won a championship in 2025, and will boast the league’s most continuity when the season kicks off March 27.
HC Shannon Harris returns for his third season with the team, originally joining as a QB coach before being promoted to head coach in 2025, where he’d ultimately go on to win UFL Coach of the Year as an interim HC. OC Fred Kaiss returns for his fifth season, having been with the D.C. Defenders since the 2022 XFL relaunch, maintaining his role as the team’s offensive coordinator through the UFL transition and once again keeping his position through the league’s 2025 restructure. Needless to say, as the only full offensive coaching staff intact from last year, the Defenders have a leg up on the rest of the league, given the rest of the coaching staff and roster turnover and the limited training camp reps available to install offensive systems and build rapport.
