San Francisco @ Chicago
Team Totals: 49ers 24.5, Bears 17
Although 49ers-Bears is tied for Week 1’s lowest-totaled game, San Francisco’s 24.5-point team total offers optimism Kyle Shanahan’s offense will deliver box-score dividends. Facing a Bears defense that no longer sports interior run pluggers Akiem Hicks (Bucs) and Eddie Goldman (retirement) and whiffed on its $40 million offseason signing of DT Larry Ogunjobi due to a failed physical, Shanahan’s approach figures to skew extremely run-heavy, especially after Trey Lance’s shaky camp. Unfortunately, the 49ers’ carry distribution is to be determined involving a dual-threat quarterback and Elijah Mitchell recovering from a hamstring injury that cost him all preseason. Hard-charging veteran Jeff Wilson, third-round pick Tyrion Davis-Price, and upstart UDFA rookie Jordan Mason are still vying for No. 2 on the RB depth chart. I’m teeing up Lance as a boom-bust QB1 play and Mitchell as a low-confidence RB2 in redraft lineups.
