Atlanta @ L.A. Rams
Team Totals: Rams 29, Falcons 18.5
Arthur Smith’s Falcons came within a Week 1 point of upsetting the Saints by featuring play action on exactly 50% of Marcus Mariota’s pass attempts, running Mariota aggressively — he finished with a 12/72/1 rushing line — permitting zero sacks, and pounding the run game on Cordarrelle Patterson’s back. Damien Williams opened the game as Atlanta’s lead back but suffered a potential multi-week rib injury. Healthy scratched against New Orleans, fifth-round rookie Tyler Allgeier figures to be active this week in a backup role alongside sophomore scatback Avery Williams. Last week’s 25-touch workload won’t be the norm for 31-year-old C-Patt, but his backfield competition is diminishing, and Patterson can function in all phases and scripts. Even in Sunday’s tough draw at the Rams, Patterson is a locked-in RB2 play. … Mariota’s dual-threat ability gives him underrated two-quarterback-league appeal, but I worry about the Rams’ defensive front seven controlling this game and muting Atlanta’s team scoring.
