We’re going to get a lot of stuff wrong, but sifting through usage metrics can help us work through what matters and what doesn’t. That’s the goal of this article: to break down the most actionable takeaways from each week in a concise, numbers-filled format and work through what’s important. Let’s get right to it.

Tyler Allgeier’s playing time jumps; Bijan Robinson fumbles in loss to Panthers

Allgeier played 16.2% of snaps in Week 13 and 20.8% in Week 14. Those are the two lowest snap shares of his career. It looked like he was falling slightly out of favor, as Bijan Robinson began playing more than 75% of snaps and Cordarrelle Patterson factored into the rushing attack as well.

That all changed in Week 15, as Allgeier was involved right from the get-go, notching the first carry of the game and nine of the Falcons’ first 14 RB attempts. Robinson’s 58% snap share was the lowest of his career in non-headache games, and Allgeier finished with 14 carries vs. seven for the rookie. Robinson also fumbled on Atlanta’s final drive of the third quarter. The next time the Falcons got the ball, Allgeier got four carries and Robinson got zero. Robinson still played a good amount in the final period with the Falcons passing and trying to extend the lead they had at the time, but he did not record a touch. The Texas product also ran only 11 routes on 21 Desmond Ridder dropbacks, a stark downgrade from the previous two games when he was running a route on practically every ATL throw. This wasn’t just because of the fumble either — the Falcons made a concerted effort to get Allgeier more involved in the first half, and it came directly at Robinson’s expense.

Atlanta has a fantasy-friendly end to the season with games against the Colts and Bears (and Saints in Week 18 when most fantasy leagues are over). There should be points in those games, particularly vs. the up-tempo Colts, but Week 15 was a sobering reminder that Arthur Smith does what he wants, leading to highly volatile usage for everyone in this offense. Robinson is still the preferred back in passing situations and remains the favorite to lead the team in carries each week, but it’s frustrating for fantasy managers that Allgeier went from the two lowest snap share games of his career to being the primary early-down back.
