A slate that I would take a lot back on — that’s for sure what the Valspar Championship was. Golf DFS can be a sick game, and being so confident in a wave split can make you feel silly on Day 1. Then, on top of that, Viktor Hovland publicly discussing how unconfident he was feeling, to holding the trophy on Sunday emphasized the volatility that comes with these players’ games. Do I have a slight bit of saltiness that he was my flag-plant at The Players the week prior at zero ownership and then I overthought it a week later when he was in the perceived bad wave? No, not one bit…
The Value Report didn’t have too much to write home about either, despite being stoked on Thursday tee times that five of the six naturally landed with the estimated advantage. Innisbrook doesn’t get the chops it deserves, as it really is a nasty test of a golf course and can make players look downright foolish if they aren’t in control of their games. Rico Hoey steam was pretty predictable come Thursday morning, but I felt so good in the trends of his game that his result was incredibly frustrating. I knew the leaps of faith that were put into Kieron Van Wyk and Nick Gabrelcik with their lack of professional success, and without having much Justin Thomas, the stars-and-scrubs approach I took wasn’t in a great spot either. Max McGreevy was the lone golfer in the PM wave, and he played very well until the Sunday tumble, but he is still well on my radar moving forward. Steven Fisk rallied with a hole in one on Friday to make the cut — his ball striking still has a ton of promise too — but it’s Davis Riley that led our charge. I was quite shocked that he still remained under 5%, as it felt everyone on Golf Twitter was rooting home their Riley outright tickets on Sunday afternoon. It’s a good reminder that these longshots who have trendiness don’t always end up overly steamed in DFS. But I’m ready to wipe the board clean and get a fresh start at the Houston Open!
