Atlanta @ Carolina
Team Totals: Panthers 23, Falcons 20
The Panthers return from their bye in transition, having fired progressive OC Joe Brady and promoted Matt Rhule crony Jeff Nixon to offensive coordinator. You could sense a rift between Rhule and Brady about six weeks ago based on Brady’s pass-first design and Rhule’s desire for run-pass balance. With Christian McCaffrey (ankle) done for the year, I’m treating both Chuba Hubbard and Ameer Abdullah as upside flex plays against the Falcons, who are yielding the NFL’s seventh-most fantasy running back points. As it pertains to Hubbard and Abdullah’s pre-bye usage, the lopsided nature of Carolina’s Week 12 loss to Miami (33-10) provides little forward-thinking help, while last week’s bye plus Brady’s firing could have easily led to coaching-staff reevaluation. … Before the bye, Rhule stated Cam Newton would resume starting despite his Week 12 benching for P.J. Walker, while Sam Darnold (shoulder, I.R.) doesn’t seem ready to return just yet.
