Passing Game Overview
A subpar producer at Utah State, Jordan Love is nevertheless being handed the Packers’ post-Aaron Rodgers quarterback keys. Love managed a 20:17 TD-to-INT passing ratio and 2.2 yards per carry in his final college season before Green Bay reached for him at 26th overall in 2020’s draft. After declining his fifth-year contract option, the Packers did guarantee Love $13 million on a one-year extension. Reports on Love’s fourth training-camp performance have been mixed. I do think it’s promising that Green Bay hasn’t brought in meaningful veteran quarterback competition. He’s a wildcard, if low-end QB2 dice roll.
Drafted 34th overall out of North Dakota State in 2022, Christian Watson immediately landed in Rodgers’ doghouse after dropping a would-be 75-yard touchdown bomb on Week 1’s first offensive snap, then missed three games and parts of others with hamstring, ankle, and hip injuries in addition to a concussion. Healthy for Weeks 10-18, Watson flashed freakish ability with seven TDs and three 100-plus-yard games, resembling a cross between Martavis Bryant and Chris Henry. (Watson blazed 4.36 at 6-foot-4, 208 at the 2022 Combine.) On the year, Watson ranked No. 12 among wide receivers in yards per route run (2.4) and No. 3 in fantasy points per route run (0.64, PlayerProfiler.com). Watson’s 2023 quarterback play lacks reliability, but his volume upside is enormous, especially in terms of Air Yards.
