Even as Sam Darnold’s stark (and foreseeable) downturn hit rock bottom in last week’s benching for P.J. Walker against the Giants, there are silver linings if you squint hard enough. Walker was even worse than Darnold off the bench — taking three sacks on 17 dropbacks and averaging a microscopic 2.4 yards per attempt — before Panthers management showed some level of commitment to Darnold by reportedly ending Deshaun Watson trade talks. Week 8 also offers Darnold a matchup-based bounce-back spot. Much of Darnold’s recent struggles can be chalked up to his abominable under-pressure play, while Atlanta struggles to generate pressure, ranking bottom four in sack rate (4.5%) and dead last in QB Hit Rate (10.9%), and has surrendered the NFL’s fourth-most fantasy quarterback points.
