Golf is back, baby! While the whole world and definitely the DFS universe start to focus on the NFL, the PGA Tour has blessed us with some hopefully decent fall golf in Napa Valley this upcoming weekend. The big reason why is that captain Keegan Bradley has chatted with the whole U.S. Ryder Cup team, and they have almost all decided to play this week as a warm-up to the Ryder Cup. After the dismal performance two years ago, the U.S. very clearly had to change, and that is what they are hoping happens. But anyways, we are getting a pretty STACKED field, especially given the fall nature of this event (who doesn’t want to see Max Homa contend again?). Since we did not have a tournament last week, we can skip right to the preview portion of this article and talk about the Procore.
Procore Championship – Preview
The Procore Championship is a long-standing PGA Tour event that most recently was known as the Fortinet Championship, and typically has been held in the fall season of the PGA Tour schedule. Played in Napa Valley on the Silverado North Course, the event has traditionally been an opportunity for some of the PGA Tour’s lesser players to try and pick up a win and solidify their standing for the upcoming season. This year, with the added wrinkle of Ryder Cup prep, we could get a much different scoring environment given the increase in talent. 10 out of 12 of the Ryder Cup team members (excluding Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau) will be teeing it up this week in the hopes of sharpening their game before the Ryder Cup in two weeks. Here are the past five winners, with scores, of the Procore Championship on this course:
- 2024: Patton Kizzire (-20) def. David Lipsky by five strokes
- 2023: Sahith Theegala (-21) def. SH Kim by two strokes
- 2022: Max Homa (-16) def. Danny WIllett by one stroke
- 2021: Max Homa (-19) def. Maverick McNealy by one stroke
- 2020: Stewart Cink (-21) def. Harry Higgs by two strokes
As you can see, this isn’t exactly a murderer’s row of winners over the last five years. I would not be surprised if we saw a winning score in the 20s because Scottie Scheffler exists, and we’re getting a different level of top talent in this tournament. Overall, we’ll still be playing a full-field, full-cut event, so my cumulative ownership range is going to be 60-80% like we normally target for these types of events. Because Scheffler is $14.4K, this has really kept the event to be more like the tournaments we see week in and week out. As usual, that 60-80% number is a guide, and I will almost definitely have lineups that come in under the range due to my personal preference. There are DFS players out there who might be more strict with those rules. I encourage you to do what you think is best for your own process and not worry about what anyone else is doing.
