Passing Game Outlook
We get off to a bit of a rocky start here in New Orleans, as this is one of the few NFL teams with a quarterback battle during training camp. It appears Spencer Rattler has the upper hand on 40th overall pick Tyler Shough in early August, but both players are likely to start multiple games for the Saints this season. It’s unlikely either provide fantasy value in single QB leagues as their performance will tend to be more impactful on the Saints’ skill position players than their own fantasy value, but any starting quarterback is in play for superflex leagues and best ball formats. Even if Rattler were to win the Week 1 starting job, our view at ETR is Shough is the favorite to start the majority of games this season given the draft capital invested in him (40th overall pick vs. 150th overall for Rattler), and New Orleans got a peek at what Rattler could do last season, where he registered 264 dropbacks across seven games. It’s worth noting that playing time came under a different head coach, but historically teams want to see what they have in their 2nd-round rookie quarterbacks, especially in a rebuilding year. That’s why our projection-based ranks give the edge to Shough, but it’s far from a certain situation and one we’ll be monitoring each and every week.
