When we review winning lineups, we can think backwards and determine what game-script ideas and correlations went into constructing each roster. In the Week 1 2020 MNF matchup between the Titans and Broncos, pricing was incredibly soft and it was easy to lock in top projected player Derrick Henry into the captain spot without making additional sacrifices to the rest of our lineup. The field followed suit, owning Henry in the captain spot at a 31.4% rate. At elevated ownership, it made sense to look for paths where Henry could be outscored by another option; one such path was to assume the Titans had success through the air. Corey Davis at captain immediately provided leverage off of Henry and fellow WR A.J. Brown, who was also highly owned. The winning lineup paired Davis with QB Ryan Tannehill and included Henry in the flex, locking up a majority of the team’s offensive production. Davis’ cheap $9,000 captain salary and lack of high-priced options from the Broncos side kept the lineup’s total salary ($47,000) well below the cap without sacrificing too many projected points and ensured it wouldn’t be duplicated despite high cumulative ownership (268.48%). These are the types of decisions we have to think through during showdown lineup construction in an effort to maximize correlation and uniqueness.
TEAM-SPECIFIC ANALYSIS & NOTABLE PRICE CONSIDERATIONS
A busy Week 16 slate kicks off in primetime on Thursday, as the Saints travel to Los Angeles to take on the Rams as 4-point road underdogs in a game featuring a 46-point total. Both teams still firmly in the playoff hunt, L.A. can improve their odds of making the postseason to 69% with a Week 16 win, while the Saints are still live to win the NFC South division or sneak in as a wild card and can improve their odds to 73% with a TNF win, according to The New York Times’ Playoff Predictor. As a result, we should see both teams treating this Week 16 tilt as they have any other game this season. Saints OC Pete Carmichael has been just below league average this season in PROE (-2.4%), posting a 58% situation-neutral pass rate through Week 15. Now as a 4-point road dog, he’ll catch a Rams defense that has been slightly inflating opposing offenses’ pass rates, defending the league’s 11th-highest PROE (+0.1%) while profiling as a fairly average defense against both the pass and run, where they rank 18th and 15th in EPA per play, respectively. The Rams’ offensive braintrust of Sean McVay and Mike LaFleur has operated a slightly more run-first offense this season, ranking 12th in situation-neutral pass rate (58%) and 20th in PROE (-3.0%). However, L.A. has still shown some extreme pass-first splits when necessary, posting individual PROE games of 12%, 14%, and 12% earlier this season. Now back home as 4-point favorites against a Saints defense that is deflating pass rates, facing the league’s eighth-lowest PROE (-3.1%), I’m expecting a fairly neutral, or even slightly run-heavy approach here for as long as the scoreboard allows.
After getting in a limited practice on Tuesday, we’re tentatively expecting Saints WR1 Chris Olave ($8,600) to return in Week 16. Prior to his Week 15 absence, Olave had dominated pass-catching opportunities in New Orleans, leading the team in target share (25.7%), Air Yards share (40.4%), and EZ targets (8). In what is a neutral to above-average individual matchup for Olave, I have interest in him at both CPT and FLEX spots in small- and large-field GPPs where his price tag makes him an easy click, assuming we get a clean bill of health. With Michael Thomas (knee) still on I.R., Rashid Shaheed ($7,000) will nominally serve as the Saints’ WR2 again Thursday night. A stereotypical boom-or-bust WR2, Shaheed boasts just a 14.9% target share but is second on the team with a 24.8% Air Yards share on a 14.9-yard aDOT. At his current tag, he’s simply overpriced for his projected offensive involvement, but that doesn’t mean 20+ point upside isn’t possible. As is usually the case with receivers of Shaheed’s profile, it almost universally makes sense to avoid them when coming through with meaningful ownership and to play them when our opponents aren’t. I’ll be keeping a close eye on final ownership projections to determine how I ultimately approach him in small- and large-field GPPs. Though he’s been a playing-time beneficiary of injuries to both Shaheed and Olave, rookie A.T. Perry ($3,200) initially became more offensively involved when Thomas went down in Week 10. Since then, Perry has run a route on 71% of dropbacks, managing a paltry 8.2% target share and 15.8% Air Yards share on a juicy 16.5-yard aDOT. In fact, 10 of his 12 targets this season have come at least 10 yards downfield, introducing a fairly wide range of outcomes for a player who should be on the field plenty but isn’t earning a significant amount of targets. At $3,200, he profiles as a large-field touchdown-or-bust tournament dart throw that should make our MME player pool if projected ownership is low enough. Able to use Taysom Hill ($6,600), Juwan Johnson ($4,000), Foster Moreau ($2,000), or even Jimmy Graham ($1,600), New Orleans has no shortage of “tight ends” at their disposal. In a traditional sense, Johnson is the most utilized pass-catching threat, running a route on 60% of dropbacks since Week 10 while managing an 11.6% target share and 12.9% Air Yards share. Still unlikely to provide slate-winning value on volume alone, rostering Johnson is a bet on him finding paydirt. Moreau is half the price and has been more involved of late, running a route on 41% and 40% of dropbacks in each of his last two games but still has managed just a 6.1% target share and 1.8% Air Yards share on a 2.4-yard aDOT since Week 10. Death, taxes, and Jimmy Graham red-zone touchdowns are life’s only certainties, as the 37-year-old TE has now turned six total 2023 receptions into four touchdowns. Not involved enough to seriously be considered at $1,600, I’ll take the under on 0.5 touchdowns. His usage all over the place, Hill is deserving of his own discussion. On the season, he’s managed a 7.1% target share and 5.3% Air Yards share, but a majority of his value isn’t derived from playing the TE position but rather what he does as a runner. He’s handled 19.2% of the team’s rushing attempts, including 35.6% of the RZ attempts and 43.8% of the attempts inside the 5-yard line. While I understand the allure of Hill in single-game formats, he almost always needs to score a touchdown in order to pay off the $6.6K price tag and often he’s too owned to justify rostering him. Since coming back in Week 4, the role for Alvin Kamara ($10,800) has been nothing short of elite, as he leads the backfield in rushing share (55%), route participation (55%), target share (20%), and continues to play ahead of Jamaal Williams ($4,200) in high-leverage short-down-and-distance, long-down-and-distance, and 2-minute situations, according to Fantasy Life’s Utilization Report. This won’t be a cake walk for Kamara on the ground against a Rams run defense that is allowing the league’s eighth-lowest Explosive Rush Rate (3.5%), according to Fantasy Points Data, but they also rank just 19th in Stuff Rate (43.2%) and are allowing the ninth-most Yards Before Contact per Attempt (1.53). The bigger concern is the receiving matchup against a defense that is yielding the league’s third-lowest target share (12.6%) to enemy backs. Derek Carr ($9,000) was left cheap enough Thursday night that he profiles as a cash-game target and someone I’ll be deploying in the FLEX spot of tournament lineups that already figure to feature a Saint at CPT.
As the slate’s second-most-expensive player, I suspect we’ll see a pay-up-to-be-contrarian ownership discount on Cooper Kupp ($11,000) Thursday night. In games he’s started and finished since returning to the starting lineup in Week 5, it’s actually Puka Nacua ($9,600) that leads the duo in most meaningful metrics including target share (27.1% to 22.6%), Air Yards share (33.2% to 28.4%), first-read target share (31.1% to 28.8%), and designed target share (10.5% to 4.5%). In any sort of contest where prioritizing optimal rates is valuable, I much prefer the $1,400 savings offered by Nacua given their nearly identical roles when in the lineup together. However, I do think in some small- and large-field tournaments, ownership may separate in a way where Kupp becomes a superior leverage option. It is certainly worth noting that the Saints’ secondary has been much better against opposing perimeter receivers, allowing the league’s second-fewest DraftKings points per game (8.0) to the position while being a little more forgiving to opposing slot receivers where they’re defending the league’s highest target rate (36.9%), giving Kupp a slight matchup-related boost, as he runs 56.6% of his routes inside. Tutu Atwell ($2,800) figures to return to action in Week 16 after suffering a Week 14 concussion. Practicing in full, we should expect him to return to the lineup and share WR3 duties with Demarcus Robinson ($5,400), who was already seeing a role expansion with Atwell in the lineup. Tough to get excited about either guy at their respective price tags, I don’t mind implementing a ‘max-1’ rule here to avoid them being rostered together. Similarly, Tyler Higbee ($5,800) simply isn’t getting enough volume with Kupp and Nacua hogging targets to warrant serious consideration outside of touchdown-or-bust dart throws. Since Week 5, he’s managed a 12.7% target share and 9.8% Air Yards share on a meager 5.7-yard aDOT. The best thing working in his favor is a New Orleans defense that has been much easier to beat via the TE than at WR, as they allow the league’s 10th-most DraftKings points per game to Higbee’s position (13.1). There may not be two running backs in the entire league with a better role than Rams RB1 Kyren Williams ($11,200). Since returning to the starting lineup in Week 12, Williams has handled 74% of the team’s rushing attempts, including 70.8% in the red zone and four of five inside the 5-yard line. He’s also run a route on 65% of dropbacks, adding a 16.3% target share and isn’t coming off the field in high-leverage spots, handling 87% of short-down-and-distance, 78% of long-down-and-distance, and 100% of 2-minute snaps over the last four weeks, according to Fantasy Life’s Utilization Report. While there are a handful of expensive options to consider Thursday night, Williams should be a starting point in cash-game contests and an anchor of most small- and large-field GPP lineups. Like the Rams, New Orleans’ defense isn’t conceding a high target share to opposing RBs (13.1%) and their run defense is formidable, but I’m almost always willing to bet on talent and volume winning out here long term. Matthew Stafford’s ($10,000) five-figure price tag should serve to keep his Thursday night ownership in check, and while I don’t think he’s a cash-game necessity, a strong floor vaults him into consideration. Given the strength of his top targets’ ceiling projections, I foresee a personal overweight stance on Stafford as a FLEX piece in lineups that roster Williams, Nacua, or Kupp at CPT.
TOP PLAYS
Given the importance of maximizing raw points, correlation, and uniqueness, we’ve grouped our top plays into three categories: top overall plays, top value plays, and top leverage plays. Our top leverage plays are ones where we identify a player that has a higher chance to be a necessary piece of a winning lineup than ownership projections would indicate.
Player | Category | Notes |
Kyren Williams | Overall | We project 24.8 total opportunities for Williams as a 4-point home favorite Thursday night. With a true three-down and goal-line role, there is a massive floor-ceiling combo here for the Rams’ RB1. |
Alvin Kamara | Overall | Kamara has to contend with Jamaal Williams and Hill for between-the-tackles work, but he’s most valuable as a pass catcher out of the backfield. He should touch the ball roughly 20 times against L.A. |
Matthew Stafford | Overall | I’d hear an argument for Nacua or Kupp here, but as the Rams’ pass-catching corps nears full strength, I think the best way to capture the entire aerial attack’s upside is via Stafford, particularly in anything resembling a cash-game contest. |
Lucas Havrisik | Value | Skill-position value is nearly nonexistent, as both teams utilize their top players at an incredibly high rate and are seeing secondary players return from injury, muddying the value outlook even more. Enter Havrisik, who will get to kick at home in the dome as a 4-point favorite. |
Rams D/ST | Value | The Saints’ OL ranks 29th in ESPN’s Pass-Rush Win Rate metric and will have Carr under center, who is a strong candidate to produce at least one turnover-worthy play. L.A.’s defense is just $3,800. |
Foster Moreau | Value | Moreau’s route participation has increased in recent weeks and he’s earned target shares of 7%, 9%, and 18% in each of his last three games. Now he gets a matchup against a Rams defense that is allowing the league’s seventh-most DraftKings points per game (13.6) to his position and is just $2,000. |
Chris Olave | Leverage | Just missing the Value and Overall list, the Top Plays section didn’t feel complete without Olave on it. The $8,600 tag is fair and I want to take tournament shots here at both CPT and FLEX in what I still think is a plus spot. |
CPT Cooper Kupp | Leverage | He’s only $200 cheaper than Williams and $1,400 more expensive than Nacua, so I have a tough time thinking the field is going to find their way to Kupp in a big way. While I agree that is right in an optimal sense, I think the gap could get so wide here that Kupp looks like an elite GPP leverage play when we flip the cards. |
Rashid Shaheed | Leverage | With middling volume and a high aDOT, Shaheed is as likely as anyone to airball, but when he doesn’t, we’re often rewarded with viable fantasy performances, as his big-play ability allows him to pay off his tag on minimal opportunities. The $7K tag is tough to fit in the context of this slate, and I think Shaheed will be underowned as a result. |
Tutu Atwell | Dart Throw | Atwell is going to come back to shared responsibilities as L.A.’s WR3. He should still have a downfield role as the team’s field stretcher. |
STACK IDEAS
* CPT Kyren Williams, Rams D/ST, Chris Olave – One of the slate’s most obvious starting points is also one of the best starting points, so I’m not too inclined to try and reinvent the wheel here and instead will actively look for other levers to pull with my remaining roster spots to ensure I’m not running into heavily duplicated lineups. As a 4-point home favorite with one of the league’s best roles, Williams is an easy top CPT option Thursday night.
* CPT Cooper Kupp, Matthew Stafford, Rashid Shaheed – Just $200 cheaper than Williams and $1,400 more than Nacua, it’ll be tough for the field to get onto Kupp in a significant way. While he doesn’t need negative game script or a back-and-forth shootout to find a slate-winning ceiling, it certainly helps if someone like Shaheed on the other side can capitalize on explosive plays to force L.A. into more dropbacks. He also benefits from a softer matchup against the interior defense of New Orleans.
* CPT Puka Nacua, Matthew Stafford, Taysom Hill – As ESPN’s Mike Clay noted in his WR/CB matchup column, the Saints have been outstanding at limiting production to opposing WRs, particularly on the perimeter. While it is a legitimate concern that should be accounted for, I think the field may overreact here due to matchup-related worry, resulting in Nacua being slightly less owned than he should be as the WR1 in this offense.
* CPT Chris Olave, Derek Carr, Tutu Atwell – Olave obviously has all the makings of a high-upside CPT but comes with a relatively modest tag. He leads the team in target share (25.7%), Air Yards share (40.4%), and EZ targets (8), highlighting a 10/100/1-type ceiling.
* CPT Alvin Kamara, Derek Carr, Lucas Havrisik – If Kamara unlocks a slate-winning CPT score, I think it most likely comes as a result of his pass-catching prowess, but he’s involved enough offensively that he can get it done in a variety of ways. I do expect him to be a fraction of the ownership that Williams checks in with where he’s just $400 cheaper than the Rams’ RB1.
ROSTER CONSTRUCTION UTILIZATION PROJECTIONS
Understanding how our opponents will construct lineups offers opportunities for leverage in large-field tournaments. These projections use a combination of historical results and slate-specific pricing, ownership, and fantasy-point projections to calculate how often each lineup build will be used. Please note: The number of favorites is listed first; the number of underdogs is listed second. For example, 1-5 refers to one favorite – five underdogs.
