Welcome to the Week 5 edition of Snaps & Pace, where we examine trends in play volume and game pace. It is meant to be a 30,000-foot view of upcoming contests, with the goal of identifying which matchups will – and which will not – be played on fertile fantasy soil. For a primer on why this is important, click here.

There are noteworthy pace-based items in 11 of 13 Sunday matchups, and we hit on all of them. So let’s dispense with the foreplay this week and dive right in.

Up In Pace

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys

The Giants haven’t scored a touchdown since Week 2, when they put one on the board in Chicago. Their games average the fourth-fewest combined plays, and a league-low 35.8 total points. Without Saquon Barkley and Sterling Shepard, and with PFF’s league-worst-graded pass protection and bottom-seven run blocking, they might have the NFL’s most flaccid offense – which is saying something considering their home city.

Fortunately for the Giants, they’ll get a dose of the Cowboys, who are game-script Viagra. Dallas has allowed a league-high 36.5 points per game and the third-most yards (430.5), while their run defense and pass coverage grade 28th and 30th, respectively. If New York can get any offensive traction in Dallas – and everyone has so far – their situation-neutral pace (8th), 25% no-huddle rate (2nd), and 65% pass rate (1st) should help generate play volume.
