Preseason DFS is a different beast. Unlike the regular season, our main job is to identify players who will get the most playing time. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Our team spends an unhealthy amount of time researching to compile the Depth Chart Notes and Top Plays (below). For showdown slates, please consult Cody Main’s article.
QUARTERBACK
TIER 1
Garrett Nussmeier, Kansas City – Barring injury, Nussmeier is going to get the entirety of Friday night’s game to himself with Patrick Mahomes (knee), Justin Fields (emergency QB), and Chris Oladokun (concussion) watching from the sidelines. Nussmeier was productive in his final two collegiate seasons at LSU, completing at least 64.1% of his passes for 7.5 YPA and better than a 2:1 TD-to-INT ratio. He will not add any DFS value with his legs, and he hasn’t been stellar as a passer in his first two NFL appearances. But playing time is king, and he’s going to get a lot of it.
Jalen Milroe, Seattle – Milroe’s limitations as a passer have greatly impacted his DFS upside in the preseason because he’s simply been unable to sustain drives long enough to get the opportunities necessary to produce fantasy points. He’s only completing 56.9% of his passes for 5.9 YPA and a 1:2 TD-to-INT ratio. Fortunately, opportunities won’t be a problem for Milroe in Week 3. With Sam Darnold and Drew Lock getting the night off, Milroe will be on the field for every one of Seattle’s offensive snaps. We know he’s a prolific runner, and we expect to see enough of it Friday night to make him one of the slate’s best options at his position.
TIER 2
Joe Milton III, Dallas – Milton and Sam Howell have split each of the first two games right down the middle in Weeks 1-2, and we expect to see the same again in Week 3. Milton has been lights out this season after two preseasons of less-than-stellar performances. He’s completed 75.0% of his passes for 10.2 YPA and a 3:0 TD-to-INT ratio. He’s also been credited with 10 rushing attempts — though it’s only yielded 12 yards — and one rushing TD.
