Cincinnati @ Minnesota
Team Totals: Vikings 22.5, Bengals 19.5
Seventh-year UDFA Jake Browning will handle Bengals quarterback duties for the next three-plus months following Joe Burrow’s toe surgery. Heady and athletic, Browning has performed admirably in 13 career appearances (seven starts), completing 70% of his all-time throws with 7.9 YPA and a 14:10 TD-to-INT ratio. Browning averaged nearly 20 FF points per game during his seven-start run in 2023 and has elite skill-player talent at his disposal in HC Zac Taylor’s historically pass-friendly and pass-first offense. More concerning is his near-term schedule (@ MIN, @ DEN, vs. DET, @ GB). Vikings DC Brian Flores’ defense has allowed the league’s ninth-lowest completion rate (60.7%), ninth-fewest yards per pass attempt (6.2), and one touchdown pass in two games. … Minnesota did show run-defense vulnerability in the opening two weeks, conceding a combined 55/272/1 (4.95 YPC) rushing line to Bears and Falcons RBs. Defensive signal-caller ILB Blake Cashman’s (hamstring, I.R.) loss has been felt. Run blocking for Chase Brown has been putrid, but he has handled 41 of 43 (95%) Bengals running back touches while playing 73% of the team’s offensive downs. I also believe there’s a chance the Bengals’ run game could get a bump from more under-center plays with Browning; Burrow was famously beholden to shotgun formations.
