Arguably playing league-best defense three games in, Bucs DC Todd Bowles’ unit should lick its chops ahead of Sunday’s tilt with Justin Herbert, whose Chargers are making a cross-country trip after falling at home to Carolina. In his second NFL start, Herbert looked like the checkdown machine he was billed to be coming out of Oregon, committed two turnovers, and engineered two touchdown drives in ten chances after the Panthers gave up eight TDs to the Raiders and Bucs in Weeks 1-2. Bowles’ lights-out defense has feasted on Drew Brees (QB24), Teddy Bridgewater (QB29), and Jeff Driskel/Brett Rypien (QB28). … Although the Bucs’ immovable front continues to stifle ground games – enemy backs have eked out 57/150/3 (2.63 YPC) rushing against them – Tampa’s allowance of the NFL’s third most running back catches (24) and fourth most receiving yards (211) keeps Austin Ekeler on the RB1/2 fringe. Since drawing just one Week 1 target from Tyrod Taylor, Ekeler has seen 15 in Herbert’s two starts, while Ekeler’s Week 3 snap rate (72%) was a season high in a game where Kelley lost a second-quarter fumble. Far superior in the passing game, Ekeler should once again dominate Chargers backfield playing time with L.A. installed as a seven-point road underdog. On paper at least, Week 4 sets up poorly for Kelley.
