Preseason DFS is a different beast. Unlike the regular season, our main job is to identify players who will get the most playing time. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Our team spends an unhealthy amount of time researching to come up with the Depth Chart Notes, Top Plays (below), and Live Show. Note that the Live Show will begin at 4:00 p.m. ET tonight.

For Showdown slates, please be sure to consult Cody Main’s article.

Quarterback

TIER 1

Adrian Martinez, Detroit – The 2023 UDFA is expected to be just 1 of 2 active QBs tonight for the Lions. While we’re expecting roughly one half of football from Martinez, no one on the slate possesses his type of rushing upside. After amassing 617/2,935/45 on the ground in 48 collegiate starts, we expect him to utilize his legs often Friday night.

TIER 2

Tommy DeVito, New York Giants – Though it hasn’t been confirmed, we’re not expecting QB1 Daniel Jones to play tonight, leaving Tyrod Taylor and DeVito as the only two QBs on the roster. Despite being a 34-year-old veteran who is locked into the QB2 role behind Jones, we do expect Taylor to play meaningful snaps Friday night. That should still leave DeVito somewhere in the neighborhood for 2-2.5 quarters once he exits. Update: Expected to play extensively Friday night

Skylar Thompson, Miami Tua Tagovailoa won’t play in tonight’s preseason opener, leaving just Mike White and Thompson to split 100% of the work. While this likely ends up being close to a 50/50 split, Thompson may have a bit more playing-time upside and has shown a willingness to run.

TIER 3

Mike White, Miami – White will start tonight’s game and likely play with the team’s most capable group of pass catchers. He’s also shown to be a competent passer at the regular-season level, completing 62.2% of his passes for 7.0 YPA — numbers that should transfer favorably to the preseason.

Nate Sudfeld, Detroit – Nearly 30 years old, Sudfeld has already racked up 246 preseason attempts and is less likely to see extended playing time. He is still part of just a two-man QB room and will play alongside speedster Jameson Williams.

Sean Clifford, Green Bay – Selected in the fifth round of this year’s draft, we expect Clifford to get roughly two quarters after Jordan Love and the starters exit and before Alex McGough comes in for mop-up duty. Still, this is a three-man committee and the range of outcomes on playing time could be wide.
