For the awards columns this season, I will be using odds from the widely available online sportsbooks at BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, Fox Bet, and PointsBet. The odds listed next to each awards candidate are the best and worst lines available among these five sportsbooks. In this column I’ll be exploring the Comeback Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards markets. Before we get into potential candidates for these awards, I’ll be discussing what we’re looking for in potential contenders using patterns and trends discussed in my column: NFL Awards: Who Wins and Why.
What We’re Looking for in a Comeback Player of the Year
- A player that is either returning from a significant injury or from some form of unique adversity in most cases.
- A quarterback that’s in a position to bounce back from a down year, or even a string of down years, can also win this award.
- Quarterbacks usually win this award, but being a quarterback is not an unofficial requirement.
- We are looking for a player on a team that is capable of at least contending for a playoff spot. In most cases since 2010, the Comeback Player of the Year was on a playoff-bound team.
