We’re going to get a lot of stuff wrong, but sifting through usage metrics can help us work through what matters and what doesn’t. That’s the goal of this article: to break down the most actionable takeaways from each week in a concise, numbers-filled format and work through what’s important. Let’s get right to it.

1. Brock Bowers is a problem. He had a 24.2% target share in his pro debut and followed it up with a 23.7% mark in Week 2, going for 9/98/0 against Baltimore. He is a legit high-end TE1 already, and there’s some chance he is the TE1 over the second half of the season. Jakobi Meyers has posted two consecutive middling shares, and he might be the biggest loser from Bowers’ ability to immediately contribute.

2. Ameer Abdullah didn’t play a snap on offense in Week 1. In Week 2, he got a carry on the Raiders’ third play from scrimmage. He also played four of 10 snaps in the 2-minute drill (Zamir White got the other six). Alexander Mattison remained the primary third-down back, but he also got a goal-line carry, while White dominated early-down stuff with 31 of 38 snaps (per PFF’s Nathan Jahnke). This backfield was a mess in Week 1 and turned into an even bigger mess on Sunday with Abdullah becoming a factor and Mattison randomly getting a goal-line snap. Plus, despite the win, I’m still skeptical the Raiders will be in positive game script enough for White to rack up early-down carries consistently.
