Welcome to the Week 1 edition of Snaps & Pace, where we examine trends in play volume and game pace. It is meant to be a 30,000-foot view of upcoming contests, with the goal of identifying which matchups will – and which will not – be played on fertile fantasy soil. For a primer on why this is important, click here.
Week 1 always brings a large dose of the unknown and opportunity to go against common perception before the wisdom of the crowd sharpens. This is particularly the case after a disjointed offseason, unusual training camp, and no preseason games. If we’re usually in the dark, this year we’re blinder than pre-LASIK Jameis Winston.
Let’s use what we do know to pick games to attack and avoid in fantasy, while noting a few pace-based items to watch as we piece together outlooks for murkier offenses.
Up In Pace
Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Rams
By now the ETR faithful are as sick of hearing how Dallas will play fast as the Cowboys owner is of hearing he won’t pack Jerry World. Yet, it bears repeating. Previously known for a painfully glacial offense, Dallas increased its situation-neutral pace ranking from down in the 30s four and five years ago, into the 20s two and three years ago, to second-fastest in 2019.
