The more that Scottie Scheffler dominates, the more important the value range continues to be. It seems at this rate that Scottie could be breaking the $14,000 threshold, which will take up nearly 30% of our entire salary in each lineup. Now, at difficult courses like last week, it may be a bit harder to truly separate in DraftKings scoring, which was shown with Ben Griffin able to tie Scheffler at 103.5 points despite earning 10 less finishing position points. But, in weeks where birdies are a plenty, the stars-and-scrubs builds look to be the best way to capture as much win equity as we can. Thankfully we have a week off of Scottie prior to the U.S. Open, and if Rory is still nursing any type of Masters hangover, there are definitely plenty of ways to approach the RBC Canadian Open.
I had approached Memorial with a bit of zig when others zag, and thought the Min Woo Lee and Ryan Fox selections were the two really on an island. Fox pushed up a bit higher in ownership likely due to Scottie being nearly 50%, but the performances from both him and Max Greyserman on the low end were definitely enough to pay off in GPPs. The only issue was Nick Taylor went scorched Earth at the same price and, despite being just 3%, he was the real value play you needed for last week. Funny enough, Brandt Snedeker turned back the clock and was the second-best play of the value range at literally 0.2% ownership. Shame Stude didn’t flag-plant him. Christiaan Bezuidenhout was a big swing and miss, at what ended up being elevated ownership, and Min Woo didn’t come through for his price tag. Max Homa continues to be one of the wildest golfers on Tour, too. It was easy to feel like a genius when he sat T3 after 18 holes, but those continued flashes have yet to be sustained for an entire tournament and he was horrific for the final three days. He did the exact same thing yesterday as well in U.S. Open Qualifying, and the three-putt on his final hole cost him a spot at the major championship.
Heading over the border to Canada, we get quite a decent field for what is now becoming a very popular event. The RBC Canadian Open looks to be planting its roots at TPC Toronto, which means we have a brand-new course this go-around. I’m keeping my ears peeled for narratives on how the course will shake out, but I’m also trying to stay aware if any of these course fits potentially get a bit overblown. It can definitely be another week where we look to have golfers on both sides of the fence with their styles and hope to get the right combination to build our bankroll prior to next week’s massive U.S. Open!
Matti Schmid, $7,500 – Fresh off his runner-up finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Matti Schmid had his first start in a signature event at the Memorial. Unfortunately, it was a missed cut, so he didn’t cash in on the opportunity, but the ball striking he displayed was even better than his lead-in form. It had previously been three top 10s in four starts for the 27-year-old, and you’d have to date back all the way to February to find the last time he lost strokes on approach. The combination of consistent irons with his ability to separate in driving distance really puts him in a different category when it comes to value plays. He of course hasn’t won yet in his short PGA Tour career, but he’s finally coming around with way more spike potential on the greens, and it feels like just a matter of time before he gets in the winner’s circle. The worry of course would be popularity, but his price is higher than it’s ever been outside of alternate events, so hopefully the field will still be cautious.
