Broncos Passing Game
Drew Lock struggled to pull away from Brett Rypien and Kevin Hogan behind Joe Flacco in 2019 Broncos camp before breaking his right (throwing) thumb and opening the year on injured reserve. After Flacco’s year-ending neck injury in Week 8, Lock came off I.R. to supplant fill-in backup Brandon Allen and went 4-1 over Denver’s final five games, showing GM John Elway enough to bypass quarterbacks in both free agency and the draft. (Lock’s top backup projects to be journeyman Jeff Driskel.) The Broncos swapped out offensive coordinators, quarterback coaches, Nos. 2 and 3 receivers, and at least two starting offensive line spots. Lock’s vertical aggressiveness, plus athleticism, and speedy supporting cast render him a boom-bust QB2 in an offense likely to be limited by defensive-minded HC Vic Fangio’s approach.
