The Saints were heavily rumored to be interested in Tyler Shough in the hours leading up to the draft on Friday, and those rumors came true when New Orleans took the Louisville product No. 40 overall in the NFL Draft. Shough is old for a rookie (turns 26 in September) and should get a chance to play early as a result, especially with Derek Carr‘s future in NO looking murky. Let’s break this trade down from a fantasy standpoint.
TYLER SHOUGH
- Shough is 25 years old and turns 26 in September. He spent seven years in college and backed up Justin Herbert at Oregon before transferring to Texas Tech for three years, and then he finally transferred to Louisville for his seventh and final college season, averaging 8.2 yards per attempt and throwing 23 touchdowns and six picks with the Cardinals in 2024. He ran a 4.63 40-yard dash, so he’s got some speed, but he only had 19 rushing yards on 42 attempts (sacks count as rush attempts in college) last season. In his “The Beast” draft guide, Dane Brugler highlights that Shough has impressive drive velocity and can make every throw from a variety of arm angles, and he highlighted that he has better-than-expected athleticism. Brugler says he needs to cut back on his high-risk decisions and notes his age but states he is a gifted thrower of the football.
