Hello again, my friends. Here we are at another great week in ETR Golf, where every Monday and Tuesday of the week, we get to endure GordonBombayOBV talk about Cameron Young, THE Kyle talking about his absolutely awful basketball takes (an alley-oop cannot be a layup), and weak attempts by meow to get in the article despite providing almost zero value or entertainment. But at the very least, we have PGA DFS, where the ETR contingent had a pretty solid week it seems. I saw a few screenshots in Discord, which always warms my heart, especially when it’s not a major week. Our resident ball-knower, Sky, also seems to have taken down contests in other fake sports, so there’s that, too. Anyways, we are so close to the third major of the year, the U.S. Open at Oakmont. Standing in our way is of course the RBC Canadian Open, which will be providing us an opportunity to waste all our money on satellites to the $4,444 Milly Maker that’s happening next week. Can’t wait.

The Memorial Tournament – Recap

It was quite a poor week for me at Jack’s Place, where Scottie Scheffler continued his reign as the undisputed best player in the world. Here’s to hoping that Phil Mickelson is still gambling and entering 150 sets into the contests that I’m in. Despite the signature-event field, Scottie was inevitable, and he finished with a resounding win after being challenged by none other than Ben Griffin for a good part of Sunday. This result ended up being quite bad for me, as you’ll remember that I took an underweight position on Scheffler. I was hoping that one of these fake stars, specifically Collin Morikawa, would have a spike week and take him down. Unfortunately, that did not happen AND we saw spike weeks from some cheap players like Nick Taylor and Griffin to make Scottie lineups easily optimal. It’s a fine line that I play when I am pretty consistently taking underweight positions on the best player in the world, but I have faith that it will pay off when I actually hit on it. Let’s take a look at the winning lineup in the lottery:

  • It featured a 13/8/7/7/6/6 build, which I noted would be a fairly typical build for lineups that started with Scottie Scheffler. Discord menace roundsb noted that the user (zroth) who won the lottery actually only had about a 50% unique rate, which is not surprising looking at the lineup that they won with. It’s a bummer when DFS players that are clearly not putting much thought into their MME sets come out on top, but this game is not always fair to us. Once again, I’ll sit back and just ask “how did he know?”
  • The lineup ended with a cumulative ownership of 71%, within the 70-90% range that I normally target in signature events with the limited field. The lineup did have a bunch of low-owned plays, so kudos to him for at least winning with a fairly contrarian lineup (Jordan Spieth, Nick Taylor).

I don’t have many takeaways from last week, to be honest. I will note that we did see Scottie’s ownership come up as expected, which naturally took away from Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Aberg, and kept Collin Morikawa/Justin Thomas fairly in check. I expect this trend to continue as long as Scottie continues to win, no matter what his price is. This should provide us with opportunities in the upper price ranges, assuming that he is taking on a ton of ownership at a reasonable or high price.

RBC Canadian Open – Preview

We move on to a week where we can FINALLY stop talking about Scheffler. He will not be present at the RBC Canadian Open, which is actually one of the PGA Tour’s longest standing events. It is their nod to being an “international” tour, which is honestly quite funny to me, but whatever. The RBC Canadian has quite a long history, but one of the best things about it is that we are often switching courses so that the PGA Tour can visit all different parts of the country every year. This year’s version of the tournament is taking place at TPC Toronto, which has never played on the PGA Tour, to my knowledge. There have been some other smaller events that have been played on the course, but overall, we are going to have limited course history here for the field to look at.
