I won’t deny that I much prefer to see golfers try to battle for par with single-digit winning scores compared to an all-about-birdie bonanza, but there’s something to be said about the absolute clinic professionals can put on when they get to TPC Deere Run. Davis Thompson was unbelievable from start to finish and the John Deere Classic is the perfect springboard for him to elevate his game to the next phase. It was also amazing to see last week’s flag plant, Luke Clanton, continue his rampage among his sponsor’s exemptions starts as he showed once again that the gap between the top-end amateur golfers and PGA Tour members is getting smaller by the day.
What a bummer of a week it was for the Value Report, as I had such high hopes for the John Deere keeping up the momentum we had from the Rocket Mortgage Classic. A lot of questions ran through my head on the outcomes, and I think it’s without a doubt a higher expectation to have chaos/disappointment when the fields are so weak, as the player outcomes in this price range are so wide. At the same time, I still am a believer that we can nail high-end finishes at a better clip in events like the John Deere Classic, as the top-priced players of these type of fields have their holes as well. But no excuses when it comes to an outcome like this — let’s just face the music.
