Sam Darnold’s fledgling sophomore year may be most fairly not held against him circumstances considered. A new offense under Adam Gase and Dowell Loggains, Darnold’s star-crossed case of mononucleosis, his “seeing ghosts” admission on Monday Night Football, Chris Herndon’s deleted year, and swinging-gate line play culminated in a season anyone with anything invested in Darnold would rather forget. Not only do this year’s Jets draw one of the NFL’s toughest pass-defense slates, they’re counting on major offensive turnover in a limited-practice year. Among Darnold’s three projected receiver starters and tight end, only Jamison Crowder has caught more than one pass from Darnold since 2018. As many as 4-of-5 offensive line starters could change. Darnold is low on my list of QB2s.
