Matthew Stafford’s Lions began 2019 faster than remembered, opening at 3-4-1 with four- and one-point losses to Kansas City and Green Bay. At the halfway point, Detroit was averaging 25.5 points per game (which would have ranked eighth in the NFL) and 391.3 yards per game (fourth). Stafford was on pace for a 38:10 TD-to-INT ratio plus career highs in passer rating (106.0), yards per attempt (9.1), yards per completion (13.4), and TD Rate (6.5%). Under first-year OC Darrell Bevell, Stafford led the NFL in both Average Depth of Target (11.4) and percentage of passes delivered 20-plus yards downfield (19.6%) in an offense specifically designed to capitalize on Stafford’s big-armed strengths. Going forward, his biggest hurdle remains recurring back problems that plagued him in 2018 and cut Stafford’s 2019 eight games short. In a year where coach and player continuity will be especially beneficial, Detroit’s offense returns its play caller, quarterback, top-three receivers, tight end, and at least three starters on the line.
