Understanding optimal lineups for cash games is extremely important, even if you only play tournaments. Players in our cash pool are the ones we believe are the most underpriced, have the best floor/ceiling combo, and typically feature a relatively tight range of outcomes. These are the best plays on the board when considering price, context, and positional scarcity. These are usually pretty good options for GPPs as well.

The optimal GPP lineup will typically mix some of these cash-type plays with higher-variance options, often in correlated lineups. In cash games (where roughly 50% of the field gets paid out), we don’t worry about ownership, game stacks, or correlation. In large-field tournaments, we should be much more mindful of ownership. For more tournament content, check out our projections, and Friday’s live show, Establish The Show: The College Years, with Alex Hardin and Sean Newsham.

With all that said, these are our Top Plays considering the following factors: mean projection, matchup, upside, and value. Ownership is NOT considered here. Generally speaking, these players are what we consider to be “head-to-head and 50/50 considerations”.

They are listed in price descending order (NOT ranked by “best play”). At the bottom, you’ll find suggested rankings by site once salary is accounted for.

QUARTERBACK

Taulia Tagovailoa (MD – DK $9,600, FD $11,200) Fresh off allowing 36 points to James Madison, the Virginia defense is now tasked with keeping the solid Maryland offense in check. We do have some concerns that Virginia will have issues scoring enough points to keep Maryland throwing the ball, but Taulia has at least 33 pass attempts in both games so far this season in convincing wins. While he is certainly in play, at this price tag he is more of a luxury than a priority. GPP recommendation: Stack with 1 to 2 pass catchers.

Zac Larrier (AF – DK $6,500, FD $9,800) Air Force being 9-point home favorites puts this game in the sweet spot for targeting run-dependent teams. While Larrier only has six pass attempts total in his first two games, he has 33 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Utah State should really struggle to stop the Air Force triple option (last year they allowed 264 rushing yards in this matchup). GPP recommendation: Stack with 0 pass catchers.

Frank Harris (UTSA – DK $6,100, FD $10,000) – After getting hurt twice in the second quarter and missing some time, Harris returned to the game after halftime and led his team to victory against Texas State. He does not look fully healthy, however, we quickly run short of quality options on this slate and if Harris continues to gut it out and play through ailments, he is still a solid value in both spots. If he was fully healthy, we would have more conviction in this spot, so it is definitely a situation to monitor. GPP recommendation: Stack with 1 to 2 pass catchers.

Cooper Legas (UTST – DK $5,400, FD $8,200) – While the matchup versus Air Force is not ideal (Air Force has extremely good defensive numbers versus the pass in recent history), Legas is quite cheap and does have some mobility. GPP recommendation: Stack with 0 to 2 pass catchers.
