The word playoffs likely is an exaggeration of the truth when it comes to what this stretch of golf is on the PGA Tour, but there were palpable nerves on the line for many when it came to the FedEx St. Jude Championship. To me, it’s by far the most important event of this month, as earning your way into signature events is a direct path to cementing your status and loading up your bank account. You could see Nick Dunlap feel that stress, as he needed the par on 18 to advance as well watching Max Greyserman and Eric Cole come out firing to earn their way into the BMW. Those type of stories and moments matter so much to players who are needing that leap to reach the next stage of their career, so kudos to those who fought their way around the bubble. Hideki’s back nine wasn’t one for the faint of heart, but his close on 17 and 18 proved his class when in contention, and I’m happy to see him reach these heights once again. Viktor Hovland was the other eye-catcher too, as he seems to heat up this time of the year and it was very necessary for him to play well to try to get back to East Lake for a repeat.

As we broke down in yesterday’s GPP Data Review, the winning lineup at the FedEx St. Jude was one of the wilder ones we saw all year in small-field events. Not a single golfer was over 15% owned, and for the first time in 2024, a $10K+ golfer wasn’t in the lineup. The Hideki-Hovland combination was unique and pairing it with Finau-Burns-Clark allowed Chris Kirk to round it out even with his T50 finish. Now, he did far outscore his finishing position, but it still shows that we do not need to be seeking out perfection when it comes to these field sizes. A unique pairing at the top of the leaderboard is enough to separate yourself, and with the combinations only diminishing as the fields get smaller, that will only be more and more true. Also, we did see in yesterday’s review that it has been nearly impossible to create winning lineups without dipping into the $6Ks, so the process remains the same with our value plays in these field sizes.
