Let’s discuss players whose roles and minutes have meaningfully changed from earlier in the season, both in the upward or downward directions. Some of them have been because of roster moves or injuries, while others have been natural progressions of the rotation.
Brittney Griner (Atlanta Dream)
Atlanta tried the double-big lineups with Griner and Bri Jones early in the season and, despite staggering them as much as possible, would overlap starting and closing units with both. However, that combo has not worked well, with those lineups producing a horrid -12.6 net rating with both on the floor together. Griner missed three games with a minor injury at the start of August, and the Dream used that as an opportunity to bring her off the bench in her return, and that has stuck since. They have also almost totally eliminated the overlap minutes between Jones and Griner, which has put a damper on the playing time of both. Griner has been the bigger victim, having played 18 or fewer minutes in all but one of her eight games since coming off of the bench.
