Well, hello again, everyone. While we are in the thick of two different major sport playoff seasons (NBA and NHL), there’s still a lot of good golf happening, and the DK contests are still incredibly healthy. In just under two weeks, we will also get our second major of the year, the PGA Championship, which already has Milly Maker contests up and available for those of you that have some premature excitement. Before we fast-forward to that week, though, the PGA Tour travels to Philadelphia for the first time in a while for the Truist Championship, which was previously the Wells Fargo until they presumably backed out of sponsorship. The Truist will be another signature event, so we’re getting the best the PGA Tour has to offer as a nice warm-up for a major. Let’s take a look as we always do on the week prior before moving on to what should be another exciting week in the PGA DFS streets.
CJ Cup – Recap
It was a pretty successful week for ETR subs at the CJ Cup, where I saw multiple ETR regulars atop the lottery and other various tournaments. It helps when the guy that was projected to be 30+ points better than the next-highest player wins the tournament with ease. There were also some chalk bombs out there, which allowed the 6/6 rate to be quite low despite a pretty decent week overall for the projections. I had some lineups in contention, but nothing that broke the bank, so I move on to this week hoping for some momentum going into the PGA Championship. Let’s take a look at the winning lineup in the lottery to see if we can learn anything:
- The winning lineup featured Scottie Scheffler, of course, along with four $7K players and a $6K player (Erik van Rooyen). I talked a lot about roster construction last week in this article, specifically with Scheffler builds and how to build them. I thought the most common builds would be something like a Scottie/8/7/7/6/6 type of build, and your success was really dependent on how your low-owned $7K players did.
- It had a cumulative ownership of 73%, despite taking on the 48% ownership that came with Scheffler. It really is interesting to me how, despite the changes in singular player ownership week over week, winning lineups in the lottery continue to be a combination of contrarian and chalk plays that naturally seem to fall in the range that we talk about in this article.
Generally, we have a pretty good idea of how to play these full-field, cut events, and I will of course continue to analyze the week prior to make sure we aren’t missing any changes in trends on winning lineups. As the projections industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see if winning lineups get any chalkier because the field is better at predicting performance. My guess is no in this sport, but you really never know what will happen.
Truist Championship – Preview
If you’ve never heard of the Truist Championship in the past, well, that’s because it never existed before 2025. As I mentioned, the Truist has taken over for the Wells Fargo Championship this year, and we are getting a totally new course as well, because the PGA Championship will be played at Quail Hollow next week instead of this week. This year’s version of the Truist will be played at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, a course (I believe) we have not seen on the PGA Tour before. This should be quite an interesting week for the golf tout bros, as they don’t have course history to rely on for their models. Let’s hope that Rico Hoey is ahead of Rory McIlroy in some models across the industry this week. FYI, if you’re looking for more information on the course, definitely hop into Discord and check out Sky’s AMA, as he talks a little bit about the course in there. Feel free to ask him questions as well!
